  I travel for work, several times a week, and my preferred hotel chain is the Hilton Garden Inn. I’ve seen several variations, from the west coast to the east coast. Work brought me to the Detroit area, this week, so I chose this hotel based on the brand, the reputation and the location to the airport.
  
  The staff was very friendly when I called, from the airport, and requested a shuttle to the hotel. When I arrived, they were just as friendly, checking me in. This was a great start, even though the location was somewhat run down...which I’ve found normal for airport locations.
  
  What changed my experience was the first night I stayed...at about 1 AM, when I was awakened by the sound of automatic gunfire. I’m former law enforcement and very familiar with the sound, so after dropping to the floor and waiting for a break in the sound, I peered through my sixth floor window to see repeated muzzle flash, coming from a vehicle in the back parking lot. The vehicle sped off and that was the end of it. No, I’m not kidding or exaggerating.
  
  The second day, I went onsite at a local police agency, for my assigned duties for work. I asked the officers about the incident from the night before and was told that the area where I stayed was heavily controlled by gang activity, prostitution and drugs...so it was not unusual, with the added “welcome to Detroit”.
  
  That same day, when making my way back to the hotel, I passed a large number of less savory characters, in the front parking lot. Apparently, there was some kind of convention at the hotel and they were either in attendance or hanging out, waiting for the other less than savory group who was still inside.
  
  Amongst all of the negative, the hotel is directly in the flight path to the airport. I’ve stayed at several airport locations and never had planes so low and so loud before. If the gunfire wasn’t enough to keep you awake, constant planes, every 3 to 5 minutes should do it.
  
  The good service from both the hotel desk staff, the restaurant staff and the shuttle bus drivers are the only reason I gave this a 2 star rating. The unwelcome thug convention, the gunfire and the flight path noise were a huge negative.
  
  I really hate to post anything negative, but after this experience...others need to be aware.
